क्या हक़ था तुम्हें

क्या हक़ था तुम्हें, यूँ नज़रों से पिलाना,
क्या ख़ता की हमने, यूँ निगाहें मिलाना|
अब सवाल यह नहीं कि कौन जगा कौन सोया है,
आख़िर क्यों ठान ली यह गुलशनों को खिलाना|
या तो ख़्वाबिदा थे हम या फिर रूह-ए-रोशन ने,
कोई मौजीज़ा किया क्या, यूँ लाशों को जगाना|
आपकी निगाह में पता नहीं हम बुत हैं या पालतू जानवर,
अब क्या सोचना 'मुश्ताक़' किसे तारना किसे डुबाना|

To feed me wine with you eyes, what rights did you have
What fault of mine, you rewarded by fixing me with a gaze
Who's awake, who's asleep -isn't the question now
Why did you vow to bring spring back to these dead gardens
Perhaps I was asleep, or perchance the shining face of yours
Wrought a miracle resurrecting carcasses this way
-won't know if I am a pet animal or a statue in your eyes
Why think now, whom to save whom to drown...
